What you will learn in this article about siloing data

In the age of data, data-driven decisions are king in the world of business. However, businesses, whether large or small, are complex systems. Data is most likely stored everywhere and anywhere, including Dataverse tables, SharePoint lists, SQL views, Excel spreadsheets, and even on third-party sites that your marketing team references for business leads. Simply put, the data is usually there, but you don’t really have it.

What you need to do is bring your data together to make informed decisions on it, or “Silo” it. Siloing data is quickly becoming the industry standard for major businesses. According to a Harvard Business study titled “Closing the customer experience gap”, 73% of business leaders say delivering relevant, reliable customer experiences is critical to performance - and data is the foundation. Yet three-quarters of companies can’t act on most of the data they collect due to silos and integration issues, making usable data the bottleneck to better marketing decisions.

Only 13% currently pull their data from a single source, though 30% are working toward it, signaling a shift toward pooled data for analytics that could become an industry standard. Ultimately, companies are struggling most with customer data and the technology backbone needed to make sense of it and distribute actionable insights across the organization.

Before, only the big dogs could afford to jump through the hoops to herd all their proverbial cats into one data silo, until now! Enter Fabric Agents for Copilot! With a little API know-how and some low-code Agent design, you can view the full scope of your business from 1 place, with all the details you could ever need, that can be applied to every possible metric.

To get started, you’ll need to have a basic knowledge of Fabric and Copilot, as well as the basic associated licenses, and a Semantic model/ Data Lakehouse/ Data warehouse to use as the driver for your Agent. (We will cover those in a separate blog!)

  1. Go to Fabric, and create a new workspace with Fabric capacity enabled.

  2. From within the workspace, select Data Agents, and connect to your chosen data source (Semantic model/ Data Lakehouse/ Data warehouse).

    Add a data source

  3. Use the toolbar on the left to select all the applicable tables that are contained in this data to use in the agent.

    Select all applicable tables
  4. Rinse and repeat!

  5. Now navigate to Copilot Studio and create a new agent in your preferred environment.

    Add an agent

  6. After creation, navigate to the “Agents” tab and add a new existing agent from the fabric connector.

    Connect an existing agent
  7. You may have to establish a connection with fabric before you continue, after which you can select your newly created Data Agent(s).

    Select agent to connect
  8. After your agents are established, connect any additional SharePoint or Dataverse tables in the knowledge tab for the agent.

  9. Final customizations - add prompts, descriptions, and other flavor to your agent, then give it a query about your data!

You should be looking at the beginnings of a beautiful data silo! You can ask general questions of the Agent, and it will direct your query to the best-suited Data Agent to answer your questions.

Ask your agent questions and get answers

With this, all your company’s data is only a sentence away, and any questions you have regarding it, the Agent can provide! This can give you the best possible tools to make decisions regarding: marketing, sales, finances, employees, and anything else your mind can conceive! Putting you well ahead of the curve against the competition.
